Rs 562 cr black money detected in 2015-16 after reports of suspicious currency

Detection and reportage of suspicious transactions, fake currency notes and cross-border fund transfers in the country’s economic channels doubled in the last fiscal year 2015-16, leading to unearthing of over Rs 560 crore black money, a government report has said.

The report of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), the premier technical snoop wing under the finance ministry, said the financial year 2015-16 saw a “record increase” in the detection of such instances.

An STR is a transaction that either indicates that it has been made in circumstances of unusual or unjustified complexity or appears to have no economic rationale or bona fide purpose.

It is also applicable to the transactions that give rise to a reasonable ground of suspicion that it may involve financing of the activities relating to terrorism.

An NPO Transaction Report (NTR) pertains to all transactions involving receipts by non-profit organisations of more than Rs 10 lakh or its equivalent in foreign currency.

The FIU, established in 2004, provides financial intelligence to law enforcement agencies for safeguarding the economy from abuses of money laundering, terrorist financing and other offences.

It disseminates this data to probe agencies to check economic crimes, ascertain the extent of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) in banking channels and undertake legal action under criminal laws to check money laundering and black money.

Renowned Indian scientist, academician Professor Yash Pal passes away

New Delhi: Renowned Indian scientist and academician Professor Yash Pal passed away at his residence in Noida on Monday, 24 July 2017. He was 90.

Although the exact cause of his death was unknown, reports say that he had recovered from cancer a few years ago. His last rites will take place at 3 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Born on 26 November 1926  in Jhang, British India, now in Pakistan, Pal gained a PhD degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He started his career at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay (now Mumbai), as a member of the Cosmic Rays group.

Pal also served as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from March 2007 to March 2012.

चीन के तेवर में नरमी, डोभाल की यात्रा से विवाद सुलझने की बढ़ी उम्मीद

बीजिंग, प्रेट्र। भारत के खिलाफ हमलावर चीन की सरकारी मीडिया के सुर में कुछ नरमी आई है। कल तक युद्ध की धमकी दे रहे चीनी विशेषज्ञों ने भारत के सुरक्षा सलाहकार (एनएसए) अजीत डोभाल की चीन यात्रा से मौजूदा विवाद के सुलझने की उम्मीद जताई है। डोभाल ब्रिक्स देशों (ब्राजील, रूस, भारत, चीन और दक्षिण अफ्रीका) के एनएसए की बैठक में हिस्सा लेने के लिए 27-28 जुलाई को चीन में रहेंगे।

डोकलाम में सड़क बनाने को लेकर भारत और चीन की सेनाएं आमने-सामने हैं। डोभाल अपने चीनी समकक्ष और स्टेट काउंसलर यांग जेईची से भी मुलाकात करेंगे। इसमें मौजूदा विवाद पर चर्चा होने और समाधान निकलने की उम्मीद जताई जा रही है। भारत और चीन ने सीमा विवाद सुलझाने के लिए डोभाल और यांग को विशेष प्रतिनिधि भी नियुक्त किया है। दोनों के बीच अब तक 19 दौर की वार्ता हो चुकी है। दोनों शीर्ष अधिकारियों के बीच संभावित मुलाकात पर चीनी मीडिया ने सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया दी है।

चीनी अधिकारियों ने बताया कि सिक्किम सेक्टर के डोकलाम में जारी विवाद पर चर्चा के लिए डोभाल और यांग अनौपचारिक मुलाकात भी कर सकते हैं। एनएसए की बैठक के बाद सितंबर में पांचों देशों के राष्ट्राध्यक्ष चीनी शहर शियामेन में जुटेंगे। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के इसमें हिस्सा लेने की उम्मीद है।

सीधी वार्ता से तनाव कम करें भारत-चीन : अमेरिका

वाशिंगटन, प्रेट्र : भारत और चीन के बीच सैन्य तनाव से अमेरिका की चिंताएं भी बढ़ गई हैं। अमेरिकी रक्षा विभाग ने तनाव कम करने के लिए दोनों पक्षों को सीधी बातचीत करने की सलाह दी है। रक्षा विभाग के प्रवक्ता गैरी रॉस ने कहा, 'अमेरिका तनाव करने के लिए भारत और चीन को सीधी वार्ता के लिए प्रोत्साहित कर रहा है, ताकि सैन्य प्रयोग से बचा जा सके।' मालूम हो कि तकरीबन सभी पड़ोसी देश चीन पर सीमा के पास बल प्रयोग का आरोप लगा रहे हैं।

Don’t know whether 39 missing Indians are dead or alive: Iraq's Ambassador in India

New Delhi: There is no confirmation whether the 39 Indians missing in Iraq since June 2014 are dead or alive, Iraq's Ambassador in India Fakhri Al-Issa tells WION in an interview.

The Iraqi envoy's remarks come four days after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj cited unnamed sources as telling her deputy, Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. V.K Singh, during his recent visit to Erbil, Mosul and Baghdad "that the missing Indians are most probably in a jail in Badush where fighting is still going on."

Ahead of Iraqi Foreign Minister Dr. Ibrahim Abdul-Kareem Hamza Al-Eshaiker Al-Jaafari's visit to New Delhi, the Iraqi ambassador also tells WION that his country wants India to "play a major role" in rebuilding his war-torn country. Mosul, for example, is nearly "70 per cent" in ruin and would require upwards of 100 billion dollars to rebuild the city from the ground up and facilitate the return of displaced Iraqis.

In particular, the envoy said Iraq would welcome India's humanitarian assistance in the form of medical treatment for wounded Iraqi soldiers and civilians.

Asked about whether the defeat of the IS necessarily means that the ideology is vanquished, too, the Iraqi envoy asserted that "it is the responsibility of the whole world" to combat the ideology that spawned terrorist groups such as Daesh in the first place.

"We all know where this ideology is coming from… we all know who is supporting and funding them… and giving them safe haven and allowing them to move freely," he says in an oblique reference to some countries in West Asia.

Not sure if Mumbai resident held in Pak same person figured in SIMI probe: Police

Mumbai: The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra Police on Monday said that it is in touch with the government to determine whether the Mumbai resident held in Pakistan is the same person figured during an earlier probe into SIMI activities in the country.

Citing the ATS, the ANI reported that the agency is currently ascertaining the identity of the person reportedly held in Islamabad for incomplete travel documents.

Ahmed, a Mumbai resident, was sent to 14-day judicial custody after his arrest under Article 14 of Pakistan's Foreign Act, the Pakistani channel Dunya TV reported.

Ahmed reportedly lives in Jogeshwari (East) with his family.

However, there was no confirmation from the MEA regarding the arrest.

The detention comes amid a bitter fight between the two countries over Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav's death sentence by a Pakistani military court.

The death sentence was stayed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) following an appeal by India last week.

The Pakistan Army's powerful military court had sentenced Jadhav to death on charges of espionage but New Delhi maintains that he is innocent.

Qazis to take ladies' view on triple talaq: Muslim law board

NEW DELHI: Making a frantic endeavor to discourage the Supreme Court from testing the legitimacy of triple talaq, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) concurred on Thursday to pass a determination encouraging qazis to incorporate the lady of the hour's view on triple talaq in the nikahnama.

On the 6th and last day of hearing before a seat of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justices Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman, U Lalit and Abdul Nazeer, Kapil Sibal, speaking to AIMPLB, stated, "I have addressed the board and they have consented to pass a determination encouraging qazis to indicate in the nikahnama whether the lady planned to give her future spouse the privilege to separation her through triple talaq."

Sibal's last turn gelled with his contention that relational unions among Muslims were an agreement and others ought not gripe if the contracting gatherings were pleasant to triple talaq, which has been by and by throughout the previous 1,400 years and a mind lion's share of 160 million Indian Muslims held this as a legitimate method of completion conjugal relations.
