Trump backs Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines

US President Donald Trump has infuriated environmentalists by signing executive orders that support two controversial oil pipelines.

The new Republican president backed the Keystone XL and Dakota Access projects, provided American steel is used.

The Obama administration in late 2015 halted Keystone, which would carry crude from Canada to Texas.

Over the course of the Obama presidency, the Keystone XL Pipeline became more than just another energy industry construction project. It grew into a high-profile proxy fight between environmentalists and oil-and-gas advocates; liberals and conservatives; pro-regulation activists and small-government true believers.

On the campaign trail Donald Trump often cited the Obama administration's reluctance to green-light the project as prima facie evidence of the Democratic Party's anti-business attitudes. Now, with the swipe of a pen, he's set make it much easier for the project to be completed - assuming the involved company still wants it.

Perhaps of more immediate concern is Mr Trump's move to fast-track approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which was the focus of vigorous protests from Native American tribes in 2016. Unlike Keystone, that project has not been held in limbo for years.

Mr Trump's actions do not mean the end of the fight over US pipeline construction, however. Opponents will continue to argue that they jeopardise sensitive environmental areas and violate private property rights. Now, however, instead of appealing to a potentially friendly Democratic administration, they will take the battle to the courts. The Army decided last year to explore other routes for the Dakota pipeline amid huge protests by Native Americans.

Defense Secretary Mattis emphasizes NATO commitment on first day

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary James Mattis, on his first full day in office Monday, called NATO allies and assured them of the U.S. commitment to the alliance, a notable stand that differs from the occasional skepticism of the organization voiced by President Trump.

Mattis called NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon and Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan, according to readouts of the calls provided by Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

Mattis, in his call to Fallon, “emphasized the United States’ unshakeable commitment to NATO” as well as the close relationship the Pentagon enjoys with the British military.

Last week, Trump called the 28-nation NATO alliance “obsolete” and “very unfair to the United States.” Trump also has criticized alliance members for failing to live up to guidelines calling for member states to spend 2% of their gross domestic product on defense.

Mattis has consistently backed the alliance. As a Marine Corps general, he served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation. Mattis called Stoltenberg on his first full day, according to the readout, because he wanted to reinforce the importance he places on the alliance.

Mattis told Fallon that he appreciated the United Kingdom’s commitment to the 2% guideline, their focus on defeating the Islamic State and the meeting of NATO defense chiefs in February.

Mattis also thanked Sajjan for Canada’s defense participation in alliances with the United States, including NATO.

Profile: Former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh

The 22 years in power of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh came to an inglorious end.

Initially he surprised his critics by accepting defeat after 22 years in power, but then backtracked by announcing he would contest the result, only to backtrack again and leave the country.

Mr Jammeh departed on 21 January 2017 surrounded by cheering supporters and accompanying ceremonial music. He walked down a long red carpet surrounded by dignitaries before climbing the steps to the plane, waving to his admirers and saluting them with a Koran.

While soldiers, supporters and dignitaries despaired at his departure, many others in The Gambia are glad to see the end of what they considered a dictatorship, where there was little respect for human rights or freedom of speech

How he was persuaded to leave it not yet known. But the threat of military intervention from regional states was real enough.
He finally became the first president to peacefully hand over power in The Gambia since independence from Britain in 1965.

This deeply blue Wisconsin village still seems surprised it voted for Trump

TREMPEALEAU, Wis. — As the Packers and Cowboys kicked off earlier this week, a couple of dozen regulars arrived at the Vet’s Bar with potluck dishes to share, including a crockpot of hot dogs, macaroni salad, deviled eggs and layered dip. Many brought along their own beer koozies, and the bartender passed out green or yellow Jell-O shots every time the Packers scored a touchdown.

Sitting at the bar was a 63-year-old cook who voted for Donald Trump because “everything sucks” right now and there’s no way things could get worse. Next to him was a 59-year-old school lunch lady who believes Trump’s policies will lead to a significant increase in her wages and cheaper health care.

Farther down the long wooden bar was a 67-year-old truck driver who voted for Hillary Clinton and earlier this month pulled all of her money out of the stock market because she’s worried Trump will crash the economy. And there was a 30-year-old union worker at a brewery who voted for the Green Party candidate because he didn’t think Trump or Clinton could relate to guys like him.

There’s a reason that the Vet’s owners have a strict “no politics” rule. It seems as if any conversation about politics these days can quickly become heated.

For decades, Trempealeau — along with the surrounding county by the same name — has been deeply Democratic, with President Obama getting 56 percent of the vote here in 2012 and 60 percent in 2008. But in November, Trump won Trempealeau with 53 percent.

The victory stunned many residents, even though Trump signs had plastered the area for months. The same flip happened in 50 other Midwestern counties clustered in western Wisconsin, southern Minnesota, eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois.

Die-hard Democrats are still trying to figure out which of their roughly 1,600 neighbors were the 482 people who voted for Trump. Several lifelong Republicans say they voted for him, often reluctantly, but they didn’t expect him to win — and, as Inauguration Day approached, they were concerned that the country is even more divided.

Everyone at the bar agreed that it will take at least another presidential election to see if this was a fluke or a lasting shift.

“I just think that people were not feeling the greatest about the direction of the country and thought: ‘Oh well, I’m just going to throw my vote to somebody that I think will change things.’ Still, with the idea: ‘Well, he wasn’t going to win,’ ” said Kurt Wood, who has been village president since 1993 and voted for Clinton. “I think, in all honesty, people already realize what a mistake they made.”

Trump Is Making Journalism Great Again

Donald Trump and his forthcoming presidency may be the greatest gift to Washington journalism since the invention of the expense account. His unorthodox approach to politics and governance has vaporized the standard, useful, yet boring script for reporting on a new administration’s doings. At his news conference last week, Trump began the process of washing the press completely out of his fake hair as he castigated CNN and BuzzFeed for reporting on the oppo-research dossier compiled on him. “Fake news,” said the man who has appeared on InfoWars and commended the outlet’s efforts.

Trump’s surrogate Newt Gingrich took to Sean Hannity’s program on Fox to assist in the maiming of the media. Trump and his team “need to go out there and understand they have it in their power to set the terms of this dialogue,” Gingrich said on the Jan. 11 episode. “They can close down the elite press.” Next up came Reince Priebus’ announcement that Trump might evict the presidential press corps from the White House for lesser lodging in the adjacent Old Executive Office Building, and Sean Spicer’s admonition that reporters “adhere to a high level of decorum at press briefings and press conferences,” according to a readout of his two-hour summit with the head of the White House Correspondents’ Association. (Or else what, one wonders?)
